celebration [AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY at DREXEL UNIVERSITY]

In August, I spent time at Drexel University with former students of Johannesburg's African Leadership Academy. I joined them for networking workshops, lessons in entrepreneurship and panel discussions, but also bore witness to a rousing field day and a fantastic talent show. These whip-smart kids were charismatic and kind, and I had a freaking blast.

See selects from the event here. Below, some of my favorite shots from their House Games.

celebration [HUDSON's 1st]

We celebrated Hudson's 1st birthday with a New Orleans-style bash, complete with oysters, po'boys and beer from the Dixie Brewing Company.

Hudson may or may not have had yogurt instead. In time, little man, in time.

With a little help from his parents, Hudson made a wish and indulged in a traditional King Cake. So tasty!

travel [HANDS in RWANDA]

I spent my time in Rwanda at markets, with artists and with farmers, and in the Heaven kitchen, side by side with people as they worked. I've always loved photos of hands doing (holding, caring, working, playing), and my project with Heaven gave me a great reason to focus on this strong, active part of the body.

Below, market merchants, a painter, a community organizer, a soap-making wife of a genocide perpetrator, weavers, a wood-worker, Heaven's wide-smiled security guard and auditor, and a handful of children gathering water for their families.

If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people.
